چکیده

Introduction Studies on humans at clinical field strengths have shown that the blood oxygen level dependent (BOLD) effect is increased in images acquired with pulse sequences detecting intermolecular multiple-quantum coherences (iMQC). Recently, hyperoxia-induced global BOLD contrast was observed in anesthetized mice [1] and rats [2] with the novel iMQC-imaging sequence TurboCRAZED. The aim of this study was to adapt TurboCRAZED for longitudinal fMRI with somatosensory stimulation on rats under extensive physiological monitoring at 16.4 T, and to detect specific activation with iMQC-imaging in animals.

Inhibition of voltage-dependent sodium channels suppresses the functional magnetic resonance imaging response to forepaw somatosensory activation in the rodent.

Results of recent studies suggest that the glutamate-glutamine neurotransmitter cycle between neurons and astrocytes plays a major role in the generation of the functional imaging signal. In the current study, the authors tested the hypothesis that activation of voltage-dependent Na(+) channels is involved in the blood oxygenation level-dependent (BOLD) functional magnetic resonance imaging (fM...

Regional sensitivity and coupling of BOLD and CBV changes during stimulation of rat brain.

Functional MRI of rat brain was performed at 2 Tesla following intravenous injection of cocaine in order to 1) determine if changes in CBV and changes in BOLD signal were regionally coupled in brain parenchyma, and 2) compare the sensitivities of these imaging methods across different brain structures. Percent changes in CBV and BOLD relaxation rate were spatially and temporally coupled during ...

Measurement of CMRO2 changes by somatosensory stimulation in rat using oxygen-17 at 16.4 T

Introduction The measurement of cerebral metabolic rate of oxygen (CMRO2) via direct NMR detection of the stable oxygen isotope O in water is a promising tool to study neuroenergetics, brain activity and pathology [1]. Due to the low natural abundance of H2O (0.037%) and the fast relaxation rates of the O nucleus, sequences with short acquisition delays and ultra-high field strengths are mandat...

Functional bold MRI: advantages of the 3 T vs. the 1.5 T.

We quantitatively evaluate the benefits of a higher field strength for functional brain MRI (fMRI) based on the blood oxygenation level-dependent contrast. The 3-T fMRI shows a higher sensitivity for the motor and somatosensory stimulation and more specific localization in the grey substance. The 3-T fMRI detects additional areas of activation with the motor paradigm.

Reproducibility of the visualization of the rat somatosensory network using Independent Component Analysis in whole-brain fMRI

Introduction — BOLD fMRI is an imaging technique to investigate neuronal activation. It is well known that non-noxious electrical stimulation of the rat forepaw leads to neuronal activation of the somatosensory network. However, to our knowledge, no neuroimaging studies have been able to visualize the entire rodent somatosensory network, especially the subcortical regions. This is possibly due ...
